A Few Laurel Highland Legends...
| The Journey Continues! It has been months since I have written a blog, but it is time to roll. The transition from river bum to beach bum has been a ball. My favorite thing is that at night, when the traffic on A1A dies off, I sleep by the sound of the ocean tide. To me, this is heaven. BUT, I am Marci McGuin ness, so I will be home in the spring with a new book in my hand, Laurel Highland Legends, Volume I. LH Legends is a project that has been moving around from front to back burner for several years. I have written many types of books and really enjoyed them all. I have books on local history, mysteries, the Ohiopyle area's paddling, fishing, hiking, and hunting, haunts, cooking, characters, WWII, and even Sacred Buffalo. I have always admired Ben Franklin for his Poor Richard's Almanac and Agatha Christie for her ingenious mystery writing skills. LHL will be a little bit mystery, a little bit almanac, and a whole lot of legend. In addition to my books, I have produced many magazines including, Naturally Yours Newsletter, The Speak Eazy Digest, The Yesteryear Press, Around Ohiopyle, the Around Ohiopyle Map and the Roaring Knob Racing Program. I have interviewed well over a hundred legends in the past 34 years, and will continue. Laurel Highland Legends, Volume I will be a combination of interviews with area legends, historical columns and features, fictional mysteries inspired by local history, there will be chapters on Sports Legends, Business Legends, Family Legends, Farming/Gardening Legends, Arts and entertainment Legends, Legendary Characters, and more. It will be a celebration of the areas legends. Laurel Highland Legends is set to publish annually. Volume I will be launched at the Spirit of the River, Ohiopyle Wine & Art Festival on May 16, 2015. Ten percent of her proceeds that day will be donated to the Spirit of the River. Be a Legend, get a Family Page, Cover Photo, Legend Page, more. Details. |

Spirit of the River,
Ohiopyle Wine & Art Fest
When Lillian McCahan first wrote to the conservationists in Pittsburgh, pleading that they "save" the beautiful Ohiopyle landscape surrounding the water fall, she could not have predicted the downfall of the town she professed to love. The town where she worked in the railroad station all those many years. She was smart, but self-righteous, a trait that proved detrimental for the hard working families of Ohiopyle.
In the past five decades the town has gone from 800 residents to under 50. Thousands of acres and dozens of homes were taken from these people all those years ago, "for the good of all." The park many promises, and reneged on most. They never rebuilt the hotel, they have ruined the boroughs sewage system by using it for 2 million people every year. This causes it to overflow into the river..."for the good of all." It is part of their plan to completely take over the borough. If the borough can not afford to pay its taxes or rebuild the sewage plant, they will succeed.
Ohiopyle is a unique hideaway. A small town of residents and businesses struggle to keep the wolf from the door today. They need your help to rebuild the sewage plant. Please bring your spirit of the river to the festival on May 16. Click here for details.
